Vincent Van Gogh Wheatfield
After working single-mindedly on various orchard paintings in the spring of 1888, Van Gogh focused his attention during the summer almost entirely on wheat fields and the harvest. In June 1888 the artist produced ten paintings and five drawings of such subjects in just over a week. He worked in the fields every day, beneath the scorching sun, until a violent storm on 20 June brought an unexpected end to harvest time. The waving wheat offered Van Gogh an opportunity to experiment with brushstroke and colours. In this painting he has set the golden yellow of the ripe wheat against a colourful swirl of yellow, green, red, brown and black in the foreground. The horizon is extremely high, so virtually the entire painting is covered with the colours of the crops in the fields.
