Vincent Van Gogh View of Arles with Irises in the Foreground
In Arles Van Gogh thought that he recognized something of the character that so fascinated him in Japanese prints. He wrote to his sister Wil: 'I always pretend that I am in Japan here; and that consequently I only have to keep my eyes open and only have to paint what impresses me in my immediate surroundings'. These surroundings included the orchards and wheatfields which Van Gogh painted in series. He also saw Japan in this field with flowers near Arles. 'A meadow full of brightly coloured yellow buttercups, a ditch full of irises with green leaves and purple flowers'; their contrasting colours inspired the artist. Van Gogh concluded; 'A little town surrounded by a field full of yellow and purple flowers; you know, that is precisely a Japanese dream'.
