    Paul Gauguin Arearea (Happiness)

In 1891 the artist Paul Gauguin undertook a journey to the distant land of Tahiti which only a year before had once again become a part of the French Empire. He went in search of what was termed in those days; the 'primitive', but which might now be more aptly described as core human elements. A significant precursor of Expressionism, one of Gauguin's canvases painted on the trip, Arearea, is a blissful exploration of the artist's interest in 'synaesthesia', a theme popular in late nineteenth-century France, and one that attempted to fuse the arts of painting and music. Besides the obvious visual impact of Arearea, resonating from the canvas one can feel a sense of the rhythm of forms, through the equating of colour, sound, and movement. The woman in the background playing the flute and swaying to the tune is one of many visual cues that set up the association with music.

When he arrived on the island that has for so long been synonymous with the concept of the idyllic retreat, Gauguin found the proof that confirmed his thoughts about Western civilisation. Rejecting the assertion that man's spirit comes from the heavenly realm, the artist explored his belief that human expression and nature is merely an extension of the natural environment that they inhabit. As such, Gauguin attempted to reveal the harmonic life of the occupants of Tahiti through a total work of sound, dance, colour, and movement. Like the 'Total work of art' being discussed in the circles of the Viennese Secessionists, Gauguin believed that an intermeshing of art as concept reflects the totality of experience and human unity.

Upon returning to Paris, Gauguin finally exhibited Arearea in late 1893. However, much to the artist's chagrin, the painting drew only derision and irritation. A few years later, in a fit of exasperation, Gauguin tracked down the buyer of his Arearea and bought it back before leaving Europe for the last time. It is an exotic image but it is one as distinct and separate from the objectifying eye of Orientalism than one could imagine. Shortly before his death, after leaving Paris to make his home in French Polynesia, the artist was charged with libel for defending the local people against the colonial Governor. Gauguin's harmonious colourscape, his joyous and fluid approach to form, and the humanism and humility with which he has rendered his subjects reinforces the solidarity and respect he felt for the Tahitians.
