    Paul Cézanne The Card Players

In an effort to gradually build one of the world's great art collections and reach the cultural big leagues, the Royal Family of Qatar recently bought Paul Cézanne's most famous version of The Card Players for an estimated price of over $250 million dollars, making it the most highly valued painting in history. Inspired by The Card Players, a seventeenth century French painting by The Brothers Le Nain, Cézanne's work of the same name, painted between 1894 and 1895 is a remarkable and humble rereading of a theme familiar in Western painting. Usually associated with working-class revelry and outlaw lives, the painterly theme of card playing is revised by Cézanne as one characterized by concentration and silence. Cézanne's The Card Players are Aix-en-Provence peasants who play against each-other in a brief respite from their work. They neither drink nor gamble, and their game might just be their primarily bond of communication outside of their occupations.

In this iconic canvas, Cézanne seeks to attach his work to the realist tradition, creating five different versions on the subjects, prepared for by numerous exploratory sketches. One can note a progression throughout the series, the size shrinks, the first two canvases are the most descriptive, the other three versions appear to be removed from any temporal or spatial context. In the evolution of this work Cézanne can be seen in a process of scaling down, of making bare the inner complexity of the theme. The artist reflects the clash of players with a solemn monumentality. In the centre of the frame, the untouched and corked bottle is the focal point of the action, in parallel to the cards hidden from the viewer's eye, integrating the viewer into the game, and convincing us to also observe the action with an economy of gesture and expression.

Featured in this seminal work is Cézanne's gardener, Father Alexander, and Paulin Paulet, a peasant from the surrounding area. Rarely selling any works and dwarfed by the astounding pulling power of his Impressionist contemporaries Monet and Renoir, Cézanne greatly identified with the working class population of southern France. Created during a time of great emotional trauma, the artist's genre scene of absolute calm and concentration is a study in distraction and perseverance through the toils and futility of life. Refuting the established iconography of card-players in Western painting, Cézanne, in characteristic fashion, turns the language of painting on its head.
