  • Katsushika Hokusai The Great Wave of Kanagawa

An iconic work of both graphic design and wood-block printing, Katsushika Hokusai The Great Wave of Kanagawa has become much more in the one and a half centuries since it's creation. It has now taken its place as an emblem of world art and a testament to the seismic influence of Japonism on the aesthetics of early European Modernism. Known to many simply as The Great Wave, Hokusai's seasick vision is one that now adorns tablecloths and souvenir mugs, but when first distributed to a hungry European audience became the blueprint for a new kind of expression. The small print, made using an etched or carved woodblock coloured and laid, with immense skill, onto paper, represents a towering wave just seconds before crashing down onto a party of fishing boats. Behind, centre-frame, is Mount Fuji that with its snow-capped tip melds imperceptibly against the foam of the giant wave. This stark sense of surging movement was created as part of a series of thirty six views of Mount Fuji. Yet it was the emotional and symbolic resonance of this particular view that made it one of the most memorable pieces of world art.

Within the small print can be found two polar opposite spheres of being; the ungoverned laws of the natural world, and the fragile fates of men. The Great Wave also represents the interpenetrative exchange of artistic techniques and styles between East and West. Adopting some of the techniques of European perspective that he had viewed in a series of prints of Dutch origin, Hokusai's positioning of the wave and Mount Fuji were instantly accessible to Western eyes. The print, first pressed in large numbers and priced in a way to be accessible to the masses in 1830, did not reach Europe for another three decades. For a long time Japan had isolated itself from international trade networks, quite simply opting out of an increasingly global economy. It was not until 1859, under military coercion from the United States, did Japan open its ports and borders. From thereon Japanese prints began to find their way into the hearts and minds of the avant-garde. Discovered by French painters such as Monet, Toulouse-Lautrec, and Van Gogh, the shape and style of late-nineteenth painting would be very different without the influence of Hokusai. Indeed, this caustic love-letter to the sea seemed to sum up the time when the world appeared to be bobbing precariously beneath the great wave of modernisation.
