Edwin Lord Weeks Paintings

American artist Edwin Lord Weeks was born in Boston in 1849. Throughout his lifetime Weeks traveled from Massachusetts to Marrakesh, while spending years in India and France. Before he passed away in Paris in 1903, Weeks would become recognized for one of the best American Orientalists. Orientalist artists painted scenes from Middle Eastern or Asian cultures, of which Weeks gained first hand knowledge during his extensive travels. Edwin Lord Weeks paintings depicted ways of life previously unknown to many Americans and Europeans.

Weeks was born to an affluent family who was involved in the tea and spice trade as merchants. The Weeks' involvement with merchant traders from across the Atlantic most likely encouraged his desire and interest in traveling. Additionally, the wealth of the Weeks provided the financial resources needed for painting and world travel. Weeks began painting while in his teens after traveling to South America and the Florida Keys. When he was 21, Weeks married Frances Rollins Hale, a New Hampshire native, and he opened his first art studio. His professional dedication to painting exhibited his eye for composition and facility with technique. Landscape with Blue Heron, painted in 1871, was his first serious oil painting.

At age 22, Weeks traveled to the Middle East, visiting the Holy Land, Morocco, Egypt and Damascus. During his travels, he kept a sketchbook detailing his adventures. Weeks paintings from this period document his experiences with Tangiers, and his first work that survived featuring the Orientalist perspective was created at this time -- a painting of a port in Tangiers. Weeks returned to Boston, bringing with him his detailed journals, which were met with positive reception by the Boston Art Club. Boston journals also noted Weeks illustrious travels, which noted him as well respected in the art community.

By 1874, Weeks took off to Europe; this time his wife Frances came with him. They started their tour in Paris, where Weeks applied for enrollment at an atelier at Ecole des Beaux-Arts. Meanwhile he found work with Leon Bonnat, a private atelier, where he chose to stay even after his acceptance at Ecole des Beaux-Arts. As he continued to travel throughout Europe and the Middle East, Weeks continued to paint the scenes of the street people. In 1877 he exhibited the paintings he'd completed during this trip.

Weeks continued to travel to and from Tangiers, during which time he would document the culture and street scenes extensively. One of his first Salon exhibits, A Moroccan Camel Driver, afforded him the ability to spend the winter season in 1901 in Morocco. Along his journeys, Weeks experienced much grief from acquaintances and colleagues on the trips who would lose their lives to diseases. Other times the journeys across the Middle East took a disastrous turn when the towns on route were suffering from famine or natural disasters. Weeks pushed through the difficulties to document some of the earliest travelogues of the Orient, which allowed Americans to get a colorful and realistic glimpse of cultures halfway across the globe.

He was celebrated in both France and the US as a travel illustrator and American Orientalist. Weeks also authored and illustrated From the Black Sea through Persia and India, as well as Episodes of Mountaineering. He continued to travel and paint until his death, even after he and Frances caught typhoid fever, were stranded in dust storms, and trapped by mudslides. He died in 1903 after contracting an unknown illness in India. Edwin Lord Weeks paintings continue to inspire travelers and audiences in both America and Europe.
