Édouard Manet Boating
The female is an unidentified model, but the man is Rudolph Leenhoff, brother of Manet's wife, Suzanne. The presentation of the scene, from above and close-up, and the pale colors of the water indicate that Manet was probably drawing inspiration from Japanese prints. He illuminates the scene with a uniformly pale light that brings out the broad areas of the clothes of the two figures. Their faces are well defined if not overly expressive, especially that of the woman, who seems to be on the verge of falling asleep, rocked by the rhythmic movement of the boat.
