Édouard Manet At the Cafe
The setting of the painting is the Brasserie Reichshoffen on Boulevard Rochechouart in Paris. The man in the top hat is the engraver Henri Guerard, husband of Eva Gonzales, Manet's model and student. The woman presented in profile has not been identified, the woman in the hat is Ellen Andree, a very popular actress, one of the stars of the Folies-Bergere. She had already been used as a model by Degas in his In a Cafe. On the window can be read an announcement of the performance of the Hanlon Lees, famous acrobats who performed at the Folies-Bergere. In the close foreground is a match holder, one of those used by the clients of the cafe.
