Édouard Manet Argenteuil
The model in this painting are the same as in Boating with slightly different outfits and a vertical rather than horizontal arrangement. The setting of the scene is Gennevillers on the Seine opposite Argenteuil, where Manet spends the summer of 1874, guest of his cousin Jules de Jouy. This is the sole work Manet presents to the Salon of 1875; nearly all of the critics are fierce in their criticism, as for examples Jean Rousseau in the pages of Figaro. In 1884, the painting is sold for 12,500 francs; resold five years later it brings 14,000.
