Edgar Degas Woman Combing Her Hair
This work makes an immediate reference to the Valpincon Bather by Ingres, today int eh Louvre, which Degas had copied several years earlier, when it was still in the collection of Edouard Valpincon, father of his friend Paul. There are notable stylistic differences between the two works, most of all in the application of the colors and the overall illumination of the scene; clearly defined and highly detailed in Ingres, more fluid and indefinite in Degas. The effect is also a result of Degas' use of pastels, which give a softer effect than oil paint.
