Camille Pissarro Shepherdess
In the 1880s Pissarro dedicates much of his effort to the world of peasants and their work in the fields, a decision placing him in open contrast with the comfortable city life of Parisians. The use of watercolors permits him to give greater luminosity and transparency to the colors. Pissarro often declares his admiration for and indebtedness to Jean-Francois Millet, creator of many paintings celebrating the life of peasants. The works of Pissarro, in turn, serve as the source of inspiration for Gauguin, as when the portrays the Breton peasants in Pont-Aven.
