About this painting:
The custom official Victor Choquet is passionate about art and buys a canvas by Monet at the 1875 auction at the Hotel Drouot. That very evening he writes to Renoir, asking him to make a portrait of his wife. The resulting work is among the most touching by the artist because of its human warmth and serenity. Renoir introduces him to his Impressionist friends, and from then on the official buys only their works, such that at his death he owns 11 painting by Renoir, 32 by Cezanne, 11 by Monet, and 5 by Manet, and 1 each by Sisley, Pissarro, and Morisot. In this portrait of Chocquet himself, one of the twenty work by Delacroix in his collection is visible behind him.
