Paul Gauguin Self-Portrait with Halo
In January of 1889 Gauguin returns for the third time to Pont-Aven; at the end of June, together with Paul Serusier, he moves to the nearby village of Le Pouldu. The two painters take rooms in the hotel Destais, then move to the Buvette de la Plage, owned by Marie Henry, where they are joined by the Dutchman Meyer de Haan and other painters. With its bright, intense colors, this panel is a companion piece to a self-portrait by De Haan, both works part of a group of paintings and frescoes with which the two artists decorate the dining room of the inn where they're staying.
