Pablo Picasso (inspired by) The Old Guitarist
The Old Guitarist is an oil painting created in 1903 by Pablo Picasso. The painting depicts an old, haggard and blind man sporting threadbare clothing. He sits hunched with his weak body playing a guitar in the streets of Barcelona, Spain. Painted during his “Blue Period”, the theme of the picture is sorrowful in nature which can be easily portrayed in the monochromatic color schemes used in The Old Guitarist. Pablo Picasso dominated the development of visual arts throughout the duration of the 20th century. He is one of most-recognized creators of Cubism, although he experimented with various styles throughout his career.
The expressive style and tragic theme marked out in The Old Guitarist and similar paintings of the “Blue Period” began shortly after Picasso’s close companion had committed suicide. He became sympathetic to miseries of the ill, poor, and outcasts in society and began to depict the downtrodden in his artwork. The same fate would also fall onto Picasso. The Old Guitarist and other similar-themed paintings also portrayed his own life during 1902, when he was nearly penniless. The original picture, however, didn’t start out in sorrow. Several infrared images, x-rays, and examinations by curators had revealed more about this amazing painting by Picasso. The Old Guitarist had three different figures hidden behind the elderly man in the painting, including a woman and her child.
Every element in The Old Guitarist was chosen carefully to render a reaction from its audience. The dark color scheme creates a two-dimensional, flat form that helps to dissociate the guitarist from both place and time. The overall blue palette creates a general tone of melancholy which creates a tragic theme. Take note of some of the subtle features in the image, all of which were carefully painted by Picasso. The Old Guitarist shows little signs of life and appears to be close to death, portraying little comfort in the world.
The bent and blind man holds a round guitar that is the only shift in color in The Old Guitarist. Pablo Picasso used the guitar to fill the space around the solitary figure that seems unaware of his poverty and blindness as he plays. During the time that the painting was created, literature of the Symbolist movement featured blind characters that had powers of inner vision. The guitar in the painting comes to represent the elderly man’s world and sole hope for survival.
If you’re looking to start an art collection, want to add to an existing collection, or simply need a piece for your home or office; consider The Old Guitarist. Pablo Picasso also has many other masterpieces that pair well with this painting, including Au Lapin Agile, Composition, and Femme Accoudee – all of which can be found at ArtsHeaven.com.
