Pablo Picasso (inspired by) Guernica

Picasso's Guernica is synonymous with the fervent pleas for peace that have echoed around the world in the decades following the bombing of the small Basque town of Guernica by a coalition of Spanish, German and Italian Fascist planes on 26 April 1937. Seen by many at the time as a testing ground for the upcoming conflict that would eventually take shape as World War II, Picasso's defiantly anti-war statement remains a worldwide symbol of pacifism. Such was it's enduring appeal that a tapestry reproduction hung on the wall of the United Nations Security Council between 1985 to 2009, before being moved to London's Whitechapel Gallery. The original, since Picasso refused to allow his work to be sold outside of Spain, is one of the centrepieces of the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofํa in Madrid.

Painted at the height of the Spanish Civil War that the Republican cause eventually lost to the Fascist dictator Franco, Guernica fell into the hands of those responsible for the actual bombing. Yet when the painting travelling to the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) in New York, Picasso intervened and declared that the work would not be allowed to return to Spain until the country was once again a democracy. Not until the death of Franco in 1975 did the work return to Spain to rapturous acclaim. By order of the government and Picasso himself this iconic achievement has remained in Spain ever since and has risen above the seemingly inevitable pitfalls of nationalism and sectarianism.

Just before visiting Spain during the Civil War, Picasso had spent a good deal of time in the country studying the passions and dramatic action of bullfighting; a sport that also fascinated writers such as Hemingway. Utilizing these key elements, Picasso's Guernica turns the burning city into one large bull-ring, including therein the frozen intensity of the tortured faces, the brute strength of the oppressor, the gloomy light, the immense brutality, and the tight framing. His epic canvas transformed a symbol of Spanish identity into the essence of national suffering, The product of great effort and close study, Picasso prepared for the work with a number of studies, using photography to ensure the coherence of his visual narrative. Tragically however, Guernica's message went unheeded and the aerial bombing of civilians have become commonplace in the countless wars that have followed.
