Kunstsammlung Nordrhein Paintings

The Kunstsammlung Nordrhein is the arts collection of the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. It is located in the state capital Düsseldorf. It has two houses - the K 20 for 20th century arts and the K21 for 21st century arts. The Kunstsammlung Nordrhein started in 1960 with the purchase of 88 works by Paul Klee financed by the foundation Stiftung Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen. Originally this collection was kept in the small castle Schloss Jägerhof in the Hofgarten (Central Park of Düsseldorf). As the collection started growing, a new building was erected at Grabbeplatz, which opened in 1986. In the 1990s the state opened a second building, the old Standehaus, so its collection could be divided into two separate collections: one of 20th and another of 21st centuries arts. In 1990 the director position changed from Werner Schmalenbach to Armin Zweite. While the first one was especially interested in drawing, the new director focussed on sculptures, installations and photo picture arts.
