About this painting:
This is one of the 18 works that Caillebotte exhibits in the seventh Impressionist show, and it is praised by many critics. The figures include Caillebotte's brother Martial, presented in profile in the right foreground; Richard Gallo, standing; and near him Maurice Brault, an exchange agent with whom Caillebotte practices canoeing. The man seated on the sofa in the background, absorbed in his own thoughts, is yet another of Caillebotte's friends, Paul Hugot. The other two men have not been identified. Appearing around 1820, Bezigue is a variant of belote, a French card game based on playing for trumps.
