Fernando Botero Paintings

These days, it is rare to see an artist whose works spawn a totally distinctive style, one that takes on the artist's name for its own. Fernando Botero famous paintings have brought about just such an outcome, realized in a style called "Boterismo" -- one might translate this as “Botero painting”. Botero paintings are characterized by the artist's iconic vision for situational portraiture that casts a light on the conflicts, challenges, and irony of society. The unique execution of his figures, decried as "fat" by critics, is the most easily recognized aspect of Botero painting. Remaining proportional relative to themselves, they incorporate expanded volume and draw the viewer to their presence.

Botero paintings are often concerned with issues of social justice and political commentary influenced by Botero's Colombian heritage. Born in 1932, his art was first shown when he was only sixteen. Fernando Botero paintings and other artworks also financed the young artist's high school education, as his father perished when he was four. In the traditional Colombian society of the time, an elder uncle sent Botero to a Jesuit school for boys and a training college for matadors before Botero was able to pay his way to the Liceo de Marinilla de Antioquia with profits from newspaper illustrations. It was the first time, but not the last, that his art would allow him to achieve prominence; by 1951 Botero painting was featured at a one-man show.

Fernando Botero artwork began to evolve artistically in 1953, when -- again using the proceeds from his shows and displays -- Botero was able to move to Paris. There, he equipped himself to create Fernando Botero famous paintings with one of the most intensive studies of the Renaissance masters of any contemporary artist. Since that time, Botero -- still creating great artwork at age 80 -- has had more than 50 major exhibits. He spends most of his time in Paris, with annual trips to his native Medellin, Colombia. He works in both oil and watercolor, but the Fernando Botero famous paintings of greatest note are mainly oil, such as his piece Ball in Colombia. Botero also raised the hackles of political orthodoxy when he created a series of nearly 100 paintings and drawings depicting the treatment of prisoners at the notorious Abu Ghraib site in Iraq.

Botero paintings vivid colors, focus on the human form, and his staggeringly precise details meant to convey a meaningful undertone are all inalienable aspects of his artwork. With ArtsHeaven.com reproductions, you are sure to experience these elements just like visitors to Botero's collections at Berkeley and elsewhere. Botero paintings run the gamut from the serious to the playful, using a variety of hues and tones. Your choice of where to display these phenomenal pieces will depend on which one speaks to you.
