Edouard Manet Oil Painting Reproductions Art Gallery Oil Painting Reproduction of Nana by Edouard Manet
About this painting: The model for the seated gentlemen at right has never been identified, but the girl is Henriette Hauser, well known soubrette and paramour of the prince of Orange. The title of the painting is probably inspired by a character in Zola's L'Assommoir, the character was soon to have a novel of her own, Nana, published in 1879. The painting is rejected by the jury of the Salon, who consider it an outrage to morals. When the painter has it displayed in the window of Giroux's shop on the Boulevard des Capucines, several critics ask for the police to intervene and have it removed.
